The Annual Grammy Awards are coming up this January 31st at 8pm on CBS and that can only mean one thing, endless speculation on who should win, who will win, and the outrage in the end when the one who you wanted to win doesn’t.

This Songwriter’s Award is important to acknowledge because a song wouldn’t be a song without words. Words are the part of the music that connects people together, to make them burst into song with one another. They are in some ways what makes the song most human and emotional.

The nominees for Song of Year are:“Poker Face“, written by Lady Gaga & RedOne, made famous by Lady Gaga.“Pretty Wings“, written by Hod David & Musze, performed by Maxwell.“Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)”, written by Thaddis Harrell, Beyoncé Knowles, Terius Nash & Christopher Stewart, Performed by Beyoncé.“Use Somebody“, written and performed by Kings Of Leon.“You Belong With Me“, written by Liz Rose & Taylor Swift, songwriters, performed by Taylor Swift.

First off, nominating “Single Ladies” could only have been because the song was such a hit; if you read the lyrics, there is nothing really deep or emotional. With just the lyrics themselves, this song would crumble and no one would even give it a second glance. People sometimes forget that just because a song has a good hook and is fun to listen to doesn’t mean that there is anything poetic going on, especially in this song.

However, Lady Gaga’s “Poker Face” both has a great hook and has interesting and clever lyrics. How often do you hear songs about a woman lying to her boyfriend about her fantasizing about another woman? Never. At least, not in mainstream music. The lyrics are sexual and there hasn’t been more fun gambling innuendos in a song like AC/DC’s studio version of “The Jack” back in 1974. But is it enough to win Song of the Year? One can only assess that if this song won, it would be a pleasant surprise.

Out of all of the nominees, the weakest candidate is “Pretty Wings” by Maxwell. Most notably because they are neither insightful or memorable. And the second weakest is Taylor Swift’s “You Belong With Me”; it is an okay written song considering her age, but it is also her age that faults this song. It is like listening to a teeny bopper song, and really, if this won, the world would be completely over run with the Disney types and not many people were fond of that fad before.

This leads to the most compelling song of the year maybe, not just in lyricism but also in how it makes us all feel. Love it before and then cannot stand it now, or love it no matter what, Kings of Leon’s “Use Somebody” is probably the most emotionally raw song of the year, which could very well make it the best song of the year. Just reading the words makes you feel like you are an otherworldly being, beginning to comprehend these human emotions known as desperation and longing. The lyrics are monumental and powerful; which makes them deserving of the Song of the Year.
