“Under my umbrella ella ella eh eh...” was the wake up alarm on my phone at 4 a.m.,” told Siya Wilson, 28, a graduated student from Green River Community College. This great day was her first day of college and she was so energized that she set her alarm early so she wouldn’t be late.
After about two hours of preparations and driving, she arrived at her destination... The college. It was 6 a.m..
“My God,” she thought. “I forgot that the college opens at 8 a.m.!”
Putting her embarrassment aside, she really wanted to know where her classrooms were, and where she could store her books. So she started looking.
It was still early when she finished scouting the campus and located her classrooms to pass the time. After wandering around some more, she walked into an empty classroom where she saw a man holding a hammer above his head.
She thought he would hit her, but when she gathered her wits, she asked him, “Who are you?”
The man replied, “I am a maintenance worker here at Green River.”
Miss Wilson paused, then released a nervous laugh because she thought that he was a professor repairing the door of the classroom.
Later that day, Miss Wilson found the college president and asked him about the incident. “The maintenance guys are generally seen in the morning time,” he explained, “but some students have different views about what happens that early on campus. There have been some elaborate rumors made, but they are all false,” he added with a laugh.
A student living at the Campus Corner Apartments says that he usually hears scary noises before the sun rises, and he never thinks about leaving the building so early.
He would be surprised to know that those sounds are produced by peacocks. Yes, peacocks.
“The peacocks are not a rumor,” the president added happily.
Most of the students boast that they are punctual and rarely late to class. Miss Wilson, on the other hand, was so excited she was too punctual.
“I will never forget the incident that took place when I arrived at the college that day,” she said. “I’ll remain punctual… However, I’ll make sure to check the clock next time before I rush out the door from excitement again!”
