Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 had the biggest release of any entertainment product ever on its first day last November making over five-hundred million dollars. The game was developed by Infinity ward and published by Activision. It currently stands as the second best selling game of all time just under Wii sports.

The two lead developers of this game, Jason West and Vince Zampella were fired from Infinity Ward by Activision two months ago for insubordination. Over the last few months, lawsuits, counter lawsuits, and counter-counter lawsuits have been filed back and forth stating many accusations about whatsketchy event may (or may not) have occurred causing West and Zampella's termination.

On April 12, West and Zampella founded the game development studio: Respawn Entertainment. Respawn Entertainment will be working alongside Electronic Art's Partners program: granting EA exclusive publishing and distribution rights. This guarantee's West and Zampella the rights the their own intellectual property.

Before forging Infinity Ward, West and Zampella were the minds behind EA's successful franchise Medal of Honor; a first person shooter title that took place in World War II. After EA claimed to right to Medal of Honor and started to create sequels annually, West and Zampella left EA to create IW under competitor Activision. Many people who worked on Medal of Honor also left EA to work on Call of Duty: the IW's first game. At the time of this writing, twenty-two production leads have resigned from IW and 17 have new jobs at Respawn.

Events like this don't happen in the game industry. Game developers are seldom household names, and something major must have happened at Infinity Ward. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is the second best selling game of all time. It sold ten million copies in a mere six months. With the two creators of the franchise fired from Activision, who's to say what will happen to the Call of Duty name, or what Respawn Entertainment will be working on. This reporter is making an educated guess that a game will be announced in 2011 with a 2012 release date.

G4's Patrick Klepek recently spoke to West and Zampella and they stated that they hope Respawn's first game “makes your head explode.”
