After coming off of most successful inaugural season in MLS history, Sounders FC kicked off the 2010 regular season with a dominating 2-0 victory over the newest team, the Philadelphia Union on a very damp Thursday night in front of an MLS record sellout crowd of 36,241 at Qwest field.
Seattle got off to a blazing start on the pitch with a goal from midfielder Brad Evans in the 12th minute. 2009 MLS newcomer of the year Freddy Montero also helped out in the scoring with a diving header that was assisted by midfielder Osvaldo Alonso in the 44th minute that was the eventual icing on the cake.
The Sounders were able to silence their critics who worried about whether or not their offense would be able to score enough as they struggled to score throughout the preseason.
Philadelphia had a chance to tie the game during the 38th minute as midfielder and former Sounder, Sebastian Le Toux appeared to have gotten past Seattle goalie Kasey Keller and scored but he was later flagged for offsides.
With five yellow cards called against them, including two against defender Toni Stahl which led to a red card and automatic ejection, the Union had to play a man down for the last 50 minutes of the match.
Despite the victory the Sounders had to place midfielder Nate Jaqua on injured reserve before the game which by league rule means he now has to sit out at least six matches before he can return to action. Head coach Sigi Schmid will be using a platoon of rookie Michael Fucito as well as veteran Stephen King in order to fill the void
