The Green River men's and women's golf teams traveled to Wenatchee on April 11-12 to take part in the Wenatchee League Match at Highlander Golf Club.
The ladies faired very well on the links as they were able to take home first place overall in the tournament.
A key factor in the performance by the team was each golfer managed to finish no lower than 11th place. Sophomore Caral Martinson led the way by tying for first place with a first round score of 82 and a final round score of 78.
Sophomore Annie Viola had a very solid weekend on the course as well. She came away with a 3rd place finish, only one shot behind her teammate Martinson and Alexa Bell of Spokane. Courtney Tappon rounded out the solid performances by the Lady Gators with an 11th place finish, just 10 shots back of the lead.
The men's team was unable to fare as well during the tournament. With only two golfers the Gators were ineligible for the overall team standings and received an automatic last place.
After the first round it looked as if freshman Jeremy Johnson had an outside shot at contending for the lead but slipped a bit in the final round and ended up in 31st place. Freshman Chris Sveda rebounded from a rough first round of 89 and rebounded with a final round score of 83 to push himself into 47th place.
Both teams head to Spokane for their next league match during the weekend of April 25-26. This next tournament is the halfway point of the season for each team as this will be the women's third tournament and for the men it will be their fourth. With the Southwest Oregon Invitational and the NWAACC championship right around the corner the Gators will be looking to come out swinging during the final matches of the regular season.
