NWAACC Tennis Championships Conclude
This weekend the Green River tennis program competed in the season ending NWAACC Championships in Spokane. The women were led by an individual championship medal from #3 singles Angie Alba and the men earned a #2 championships in singles from Daniel Cotton. As a team the women finished second overall to six time team champion Bellevue while the men finished third behind Spokane and Treasure Valley.
Defending NWAACC champion Jodi Owen (GRCC Sophomore) earned a spot in the ladies championship final once again but did not prevail over Skagit Valley's Lindsey Newman who ran the table with an undefeated season.
Baseball Qualifies for Western Region Playoffs
With the final four games of the regular season on tap, Centralia, Tacoma and Green River were all battling for two spots and home field advantage in the Western Region playoffs this past weekend. After winning two games against Grays Harbor, the Gators were poised to earn home field advantage on Sunday if they could earn a victory against top ranked Lower Columbia. Continuing to dominate on the mound, Jake Shadle and Nathan O'Bryan took the Gators into the ninth inning in 0-0 offensive struggle before the Red Devils scored two runs on a two out triple.
The loss combined with a Tacoma sweep of Centralia, now sets the table for May 22-23 as the Gators return to Tacoma for a best of three series with a berth to the NWAACC Championships. Green River and Tacoma have played five times this season with four of the games being decided by two or fewer runs. The Gators enter the playoff series with a pitching staff holding a 1.41 ERA, but offensively the team is batting .261 on the season.
Softball Enters NWAACC Tournament on Friday
The Green River softball team will take off on Thursday afternoon to participate in their second consecutive NWAACC Championship tournament at Delta Park, in Portland, OR. The Gators finished as the #4 seed from the West Region and will take on the #1 seed from the South, Clackamas CC on Friday morning at 11:30. The other two teams in their quarter bracket include Everett CC and Walla Walla CC. The winners will play each other at 3:30, while the losers will also play in an elimination game at 3:30 as well.
With three capable pitchers in Alexa Derrick, Kayla Evans and Caitlyn Duggan, Gator softball has the depth to give their opponents troubles, but will need timely hitting and solid defense to be able to advance in the tournament.
Golf Teams Prepare for Championships
The GRCC Golf teams will play in the season ending 36 hole event on Sunday May 23 and Monday May 24 at Gold Mountain Golf Club in Bremerton. The women have been slugging it out with Spokane all spring and will look to post their best rounds of the season at the championship. Caral Martinson and Annie Viola both have the potential to contend for the individual medal. For the men, Jeremy Johnson looks to cap off his solid freshman campaign with a strong showing.
