Softball Soaked in Portland

With the NWAACC softball tournament slated to begin on Friday morning, the double elimination event suffered mightily due to Northwest weather conditions.  Three days of on again, off again pounding showers wreaked havoc on the contests, the coaches and the tournament directors.    Try as they might, only four of the opening round games were completed by Sunday evening.  The difficult decision by the tournament committee was to shorten the event to a single elimination event.

The Gators set to play Clackamas Community College could manage only three innings over the first two days before being allowed to complete the contest on Monday morning.  With a 1-0 lead after the delay, the Gators were poised to upset the #1 team from the Southern Region.  The Gators scored a second run before defensive errors contributed to a three run Clackamas fifth inning.  Clackamas finished with the 3-2 victory sending Green River home.

Sophomore Caitlyn Duggan (P) and Carrie Crookshank (3B) were both selected to the All-Western Region First Team.

Baseball Eliminated in Tacoma

When Green River faced Tacoma in the best of three series this weekend for a chance to advance to the NWAACC Championships, it was going to be two of the top pitching staffs in the NWAACC going head to head.  In the first game, Jake Shadle was outstanding on the mound for GRCC.  Both teams started out tight defensively contributing some costly errors to the final margin.  Green River played aggressive offensively, but could not get the timely hit needed to bring the runs across the plate in the 3-2 defeat.

In the second game, freshman Cody Hebner took to the mound and over powered the Titans for four innings.  Then the rain came.  Fighting through a rain shower, the Titans number nine hitter hit a home run of of Hebner to take a 3-1 lead.  Shortly thereafter the umpires called for a rain delay.  Once the clouds parted, the Gators were forced to bring in ace David Macey to hold the Titans at bay.  Green River brought the crowd to their feet by loading the bases in the top of the ninth, but were unable to get a hit to score the needed runs.

Women's Golf Finishes Second

During the regular season, the GRCC women's golf team looked to have their best chance to knock off defending league champion Spokane as they have had in three seasons.  However an eight shot deficit (229-237) after the first day was too much to overcome for the Gators as the three member team fought hard to close the gap to two strokes (480-482).  Sophomores Carla Martinson and Annie Viola tied for second place honors with 157, two shots behind medalist Dona Dunovant from Walla Walla.

On the men's side, Green River was led by Jeremy Johnson's 154 to finish in ninth place as a team.
