Lots of students at GRCC are using the internet site called "Rate-My-Professor" to collect information about their professors. This is one of the most popular sources to get to know more about professors. This web site contains almost every college or university in America, England, Scotland, Canada, Wale and professors' teaching style, characteristic, and other things about them. The information in this website is not an officially proved just a place to communicate about those professors. Students who took one's class leave opinions or ideas about the professor on the website.
Rate-my-professor has been around for quite awhile now, and enough Green River students have used the site to give some professors up to 8 pages of comments. Ratemyprofessor.com has been around since 2004 and as an anonymous rating system for students by students, its going fairly strong.
Paul Moser, a GRCC student currently enrolled in math 142, used the site, "Steven Black is really nice and a great teacher. However, this class is relatively difficult with him. I chose the class because I thought I could earn a good grade without working too hard… In fact, he is quite strict about time and [there's] lots of outside work." Based on personal experience, Moser didn't feel the website was all that useful.
Ethan Wade used rate-my-professor for Lori Vail's English 101 class. Vail currently has a 5.0 and a "hot chili" rating, and Wade is happy with his choice this quarter, all based on rate-my-professor. Jose Ho, another student in English 101, ignored a few bad comments on Paul Allen, and doesn't regret the choice. "I am an international student, so I have to put more effort [in] than my classmates. Every time I turn [in] my assignment, he gives me nice and neat feedback that is encouraging."
There are rumors that some professors will hop onto the site themselves to improve their ratings, which is technically possible, but most likely uncommon. Thanks to the complete anonymity of the site, we'll never really know for sure. As a frequent user of ratemyprofessor.com, I am grateful for past students' feedback, though if I need a specific class, I'll just grin and bear it rather than not graduate.
There is one obvious downside to the site though, if a student has a personal grudge against an instructor, there is no way for them to retaliate on the website. For now, taking the entire website as constructive criticism is the best way for instructors to handle the sometimes flat out rude comments left by previous students.
