Within every person whether young or old is a festering impulse to "fit in," to fit into a common fad, to fit into a movement or the like. But today, to great wonder and amusement, the current "style" is not skinny jeans as one would guess had they walked down a college campus or crazy hair-cut or reckless stupidity, but rather a political stance of going Green.
The galloping rate of proponents going green is staggering, but the question that begs is this: are they true converts, through and through or mere seekers of a band wagon thrill who are only nominally green. It is mine conviction that the majority of Green proponents fall into the latter category.
As to why I believe this to be the case, my single piece of evidence, though single and one is nonetheless important and grand, is the amount of hypocrisy; claiming to be "Green" while not living in congruency with "Green."
Yes, I said hypocrisy. How many of these so called "greeners" turn off their running water while brushing their teeth? Or turn off electricity when not useful, as turning your lights off at home in the rooms not used? Or not blasting your heater in the car with the windows open? Or putting in the extra little effort to carpool? Or recycle a piece of paper?
It's very hard to walk the talk. But is it really hard to do all these things?
It is precisely this fact that it's so easy to fulfill all these things and yet most students who are "green" answered negatively that exudes the clearest case of hypocrisy. How can you be committed in the slightest to something if you can't even meet the slightest of its demands?
I mean, I understand if someone who is "Green" doesn't put up solar panels on their roof, or drives a Smart car or Toyota Prius, or installs a geothermal heating system. These things are far too costly and material cost is one thing no college student can manage. However, such is not asked of the majority.
Saving the planet is an important thing, but one thing we cannot do is speak of progress towards that end by simple appeal to the "numbers."
