Winter international transfer fair an overall success

International transfer fair was held on 27th of January at Lindbloom Center. Forty different schools participated in the fair from several different states, and even a few from Canada.

The fair was held quite successfully. Students showed their passion about how much they want to transfer to 4-year colleges. They were excited to know what the school looks like, how big it is, how competitive it would be, and so forth.

Akira Ogiso, majoring in Business, says, "the fair was quite helpful. I got a lot of information from all the different schools such as scholarship offers or application deadlines". Representatives from all the colleges were eager to answer any questions international students asked.

While most students were happy with the turnout of colleges from the area, several were disappointed in the lack of state colleges in attendance. As most international students interested in transferring are looking for a specific college that may or may not be local, this has been a challenge for Green River in the past.

Most students don't realize the reasons behind a lack of state colleges being in attendance. The transfer fair planning is done by a committee of international programs professionals from some of the community colleges in Western Washington. The committee has been trying to get some popular colleges to participate but it is still a work in progress.

According to Martha Koch, International Student Activities Manager, it is quite challenging to make popular states colleges to participate. "The committee has tried to encourage schools with popular majors such as business or engineering to attend but again, we have to work with the schools that apply to participate in the fairs. Also, the committee makes an effort to attract schools from out of state as well as schools from within Washington.

So while there is still room for improvement, students can rest assured that ISA is doing everything they can to improve international transfer fairs in the future. In the meantime, students are always welcome to research their chosen college in the advising center and to speak with counselors about transfer requirements for their chosen university.
