Red Flag

What do you do if you're in danger? Many people call 911, but what if these dangers are not that serious? If you have felt the suspicion that someone might be stalking you or your classmate seems different and unstable, you could send a red flag!

The Red Flag Program is made to keep Green River Community College students safe. If you log on to the school's website, you can find the "Send a Red Flag" link on the very bottom of the website. When you click on it, another page will open which shows more information about the program.

According to the site, the following are circumstances in which people should send a red flag. Examples include:

  •  "All suspicious behaviors or actions as well as any criminal acts."
  •  "Knowledge of information or incidents that could cause harm."
  •  "Knowledge of information or acts that could threaten College internal intelligence, information, reputation, and/or property as well as violations of student code of conduct."
  • "Any high risk behaviors such as under the influence of drugs or alcohol."
  •   "Expressions by others of feelings of depression, reduction of self worth, and/or uselessness including suicidal symptoms."

But what happens after a red flag is sent? If a student reports their message through the online system, it goes to several different people on campus, and proper service for the problem will be provided.

John Ramsey, director of public information, says that if a problem involves a mental health issue like depression, it is dealt with by a counselor.

Even though, you can hardly see where the red flag link is, this is an important program for students. Through this system, they get an opportunity to resolve their problems and inform the school of problems students may encounter. It can help the connection between staff and students, helping to make a better school for all.

However, whenever students go to report something they should keep in mind that this program does not replace emergency notification systems such as campus safety and 911.
