With unemployment in Washington State on the rise, Governor Gregoire proposes certain actions be taken in the educational level. Those actions she is proposing will not appease students attending colleges or universities.
"It's a new day and a new time," she states. "I know your enrollments are way up, but those enrollments need to be there." Everyone is aware the nation has faced the worst recession in 80 years, an "all cuts" budget isn't the answer for Washington State. What is being proposed is that investing more in Worker Retraining to reduce the current unemployment level.
"Beyond that, the real key of this strategy is to go a step further to the jobs of tomorrow that may not pay off in immediate jobs, but can pay off later in emerging technologies, such as clean and renewable energy, global health and other fields," said Lisa Brown D-Spokane.
In a recession like this, Worker Retraining becomes a particularly smart investment for our state," said Sen. Derek Kilmer, D-Gig Harbor. "The Worker Retraining Program means everything to me, without the program, I hate to think where I might be today," said Ernie Bushong. "My family and I thank Senator Kilmer, Grays Harbor College and everyone else who supports the program."
"What the government needs to concentrate on is not just the workers, but the small business as well," said Green River Community College Student Ace Louis.
"They taxed the hell out of me even though I can hardly make a profit to sustain the business. What they need to inform the worker is that money doesn't come from thin air; businesses have to be able to generate it in order to move the wealth. What we need are businesses to hire workers, we already know there are plenty of able hands out there."
