National Wear Red Day is a day when Americans take women's health care to heart and show their support by wearing red.
According to a study done by the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute in 2006 heart disease is now the number 1 killer in women, regardless of race or ethnicity. One in 4 women will die from heart disease.
Green River Community College (GRCC) took part in the cause not just on National Wear Red Day, but the whole week. There was an event planned for each day of the school week that would not only make people aware of the disease but teach them ways to get "heart healthy".
Some of the activities included, working out, reducing stress, eating healthy, and receiving knowledge on healthy life styles and things you can do to keep yourself healthy long term.
On Feb. 5, the college was a sea of red as students and teachers showed their support by wearing the color. "I don't know anyone personally that has died from this but it's important to support it because I could 1 day be part of this statistic," says running start student Erika Roth. "I also noticed a lot of students at my high school wearing red," said Roth.
Although many people knew what the day was and what it meant to wear red, there were those who had no idea why they were wearing red, and had the explanation of "My friend told me to wear red today, I wasn't really sure why till I got to school and noticed how many people were wearing red and had to ask someone why. Then I was happy that I had done it even though I was supporting a cause that I didn't really know about," says second year student AshLeigh Vincent.
"I think it's great how many people showed that they cared today, and hope that if there is ever another national day to support a disease or cancer that this school will be just as supportive as they have been today. I know I will be", says Jessica Klavuhn.
Many students have agreed with this statement and say that they are happy they go to a school that gets everyone involved with nation wide issues.
