Campus Corner Apartments face theft and worried students

Almost three weeks have passed since the four recent burglaries in the Campus Corner Apartments (CCA) over spring break. The crimes were committed during the day around 1 o'clock. This is when many students are not in their apartments. These robberies were not forced invasions, but they appear to be intentional when considering the time and places where these burglaries occurred.

All apartments which were targeted are first floor apartment, which are the easiest to get in to. SungYoon Choi was a victim to these thefts. Two days after the burglary, he immediately moved out to another apartment closer to Green River Community College. He said, "I had many valuable things stolen including my laptop, camera, two backpacks, and cell phone. I can't remember whether our front door was locked or not because I'm not the last person who came out of my apartment."

According to Debbie Daniels, the CCA manager, the one thing that she wants to make clear is that residents who live in CCA didn't lock the main door before the crime. The main door is almost impossible to break in. If thieves can pass the main door, the other doors are relatively easy to forcibly enter. Moreover, almost all residents in CCA used to lock only their room doors.

So what has been done since to prevent the campus apartments from future crime? Already, the management team of CCA and Safety held two meetings about what is going on. Safety is also doing rounds to each apartment now to check whether their main door is locked or not. If it is unlocked, they lock it for residents. In addition, they made stickers and magnets which say "Lock your front door" and put it in on all main doors to remind residents to lock doors whenever they go in or out.

Do residents still feel worried? Seolyoung Bang, who is a CCA resident, says her worry is much less than when crimes first happened, and now she will always be aware. Checking a door whenever you go - even if you are just doing laundry - may be annoying, but it's the best way to keep yourself and your possessions safe.
