The video game takes place in the year 2025, three PMC (private military contractors) battle it out to see who gets the biggest paycheck. These "Big Three" companies are named Valor Company Inc., S.V.E.R (Seryi Volk Executive Response), and Raven Industries. Each company has advantages and disadvantages over each other, but who gets to decide the fate of the companies? You, as the player get to choose which company you fight with.
Developed by Zipper Interactive and Sony Entertainment America INC. MAG is for multiplayer use only on the Playstation 3 network and its console. Its users consist of 64-256 players all playing online at the same time. The possibilities for scoring value are immense because there are 256 players on in a match.
The game works just like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare when playing online. The player has a level and gets experience for both completing a match, completing objectives in matches and shooting members of the opposing team. Leveling up can unlock gear and equipment as well as weapons and attachments to increase the effectiveness of the weapon and chances of survival on the battlefield.
There are several big differences in the way the user improves his chance of survival between Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and in MAG. The player must assign skill points into a certain category (this is not all done automatically) and the cost for each of the numerous feats, gear, weapons and attachments are all pricey (skill point wise) in each of the categories.
The player can also re-spec the skill tree but will lose all the equipment, weapons and attachments, but the player doesn't lose the skill points based on the character's level.
In addition to character progression, the player can choose if done correctly spawn (meaning the player comes back to the battlefield with full health and ammunition) while being dropped out of an air plane (don't worry, you have a parachute as well.)
Once a person reaches level 15 he or she can become a squad leader and give the group of people around them bonuses to turn the tide of a battle if it doesn't fall in favor of the Mercenary that the player has chosen.
The downside to all of this is on an occasion the network will shut down and start back up again (most likely a technical problem with Playstation's network servers). But overall is a really fun game. First the player has to start out going through the basic training simulator and then the player can move onto playing "suppression" matches which are mock war game between two teams from the same company to train and prepare the new recruits for what lies ahead of them. Once the player has reached a specific level the player can now play modes where it's a company against one of the other two PMC's. The game play then becomes absolute chaos, but excitingly fun.
The game revolutionizes the way people play online because with each match hosting such a high number, each of the companies fighting the other two companies in all out insanity and chaos, video game fans will enjoy the experience and adrenaline rush when playing MAG.
