Most students have a pre-conceived notion that all museums are stuffy, old, boring and smell funny but White River Museum is truly Auburn's very own small town trophy.

At first glance, the museum looks like just a small building hidden in the midst of the ever growing community that surrounds it. But upon entering, the feeling is similar to one of an old country cottage, peaceful and laidback, adding a homey feeling to the mix.

"My favorite showcase is the cabin one because it shows the way they used to live back then, very different from the mansions that we see nowadays," says Kristen Bruhahn,

Bruhahn has been the museum's bookkeeper and administrative assistant for ten years. The museum has a variety of different exhibits, each detailing key events or historical moments in time. Showcases include Pre-European Era, the Early Settlers, up to the end of 1924.

Green River Community College student, William Casey says honestly, "I've never really liked museums, but walking into the White River one gave me a different feeling, it was more comfortable."

At White River, students say there is more to museums than the preconception many people hold, "they are really fun," explains Tara McCauley, the Curator of Education. "If only we could get past that idea so students could see how wonderful they can be."
The White River Museum is full of Auburn's history, defining moments and memories, many of which can be related to school and classes. All of the Auburn School District is a part of the museum, including GRCC. A couple of the history teachers have had showcases within the museum and have used them as a resource for their students.

"I found out about the museum only a little bit ago through a class I took for Michelle Marshman," states Casey. Marshman, a GRCC Women's History teacher has an exhibit titled "Suffer for Beauty," one that shows the evolution of women's dress and the techniques they used for beauty.

"I love it! I think that the museum is a great resource for students," McCauley adds her enthusiasm over the use of the museum by teachers.

The museum also holds events for the community to come and enjoy the experiences and memories of the city of Auburn. Participants in all of these events are encouraged to bring items to contribute to the showing.

Although many students don't know about the learning experience at the White River Museum, it can be a worthwhile trip to understand some of Auburn's history.

Upcoming Events:
May 8: Showcase of the evolution of household items and products.
June 12: A family friendly open house through the exhibits
July 10: Seminar for home care of lace and linens.
