Peer navigators in CAP (Commencement Achievement Program) are working hard to help students succeed in their educational goals on campus. CAP helps all Green River students, but they are specifically geared towards helping the under-represented groups such as international, minority and non-traditional students.

Gabriel Martinez, a peer navigator of CAP, says, "I work here because I like to help people. I'm a minority student, so I can tell truly that CAP is [a] really great program to help minority people." Martinez went on to say, "at the same time, I can build my leadership skills, so I am working here to help you help me."

Martinez works with eight other peer navigators, all there to provide academic and personal advising to students from all walks of life. CAP hosts workshops to promote diversity, tours of universities, and several on campus events designed to help students.

"We have a record number of students in 2010 winter quarter. Peer navigators serve over 200 students, but still everyone is welcome," says Bryce Hughes, CAP support supervisor.

Any student looking for help from CAP is welcome to stop by their offices, located on the second floor of the Lindbloom Student Center (LSC). While it isn't required, filling out the CAP intake form is highly suggested to make sure each student gets the help they need. Being nervous isn't possible at CAP, peer navigators strive to make everything as comfortable and welcoming as possible and their "Can I help you?" is always accompanied by a smile.

So, for any student having a rough time, regardless of the cause, feel free to pop in and strike up a conversation with a peer navigator today. If CAP sounds like something you'd like to be involved in, contact Bryce Hughes at bhughes@greenriver.edu.
