I’m Remco, 17, a Dutchman and currently Managing Editor for The Current. I moved to America on 09/09/09 and enrolled in my first classes in Fall quarter 2009. One of the classes I took that quarter was the newspaper because at the time my major was journalism and I heard good things about it from another Dutch student who was here last year.
I started off writing a column and midway through the quarter I got asked to be News Editor in Winter 2010 because the old editor was transferring. I happily accepted and after a quarter of long, stressful nights of editing we decided to add a new position to spread the stress around and it was given to me.
So right now I am Managing Editor, which means I lay out half of the print newspaper (the News, Features, A&E, Sports and Satire pages) and oversee and help out with all of the sections when it comes to story ideas, reporting and getting pictures.
Being an editor has been a great experience for me. Because of the different positions I’ve held, I’ve been able to do almost everything that is usually done in normal newspapers; reporting, prioritizing stories, laying out pages and dealing with complaints people have, among other things of course. Besides learning things, I also met the best friends I have and my girlfriend here and you always have somewhere to hang out with fun people.
My major is Political Science and I’d like to go into political journalism if I get the chance, but I’m not sure if I can find the money to transfer to an American 4-year college. Donations are welcome.
