Green River’s Drama Department, known as Theatre Extempore, will be showcasing a classic 1930’s backstage comedy known as George S. Kaufman and Edna Ferber’s Stage Door starting May 28th.

With a cast of 20 girls and 10 boys, the show will follow the plot of several aspiring actresses who live in a theatre together and vie for the big time on Broadway and boasts both romance and comedy. With Katherine Hepburn, Ginger Rogers and Lucille Ball in the original film cast, the play was a smash hit in 1936.

As the third play of the 2009-2010 year, Stage Door was actually the second pick for the spring play; it was originally going to be another comedy from the 1930’s called, You Can’t Take It With You, which was also co-written by George S. Kaufman but with Moss Hart.

Director Gary Taylor decided to change it to Stage Door, since only 20 girls and 10 boys signed up for the class, which wouldn’t have worked for You Can’t Take It With You, since it would have needed 20 boys and 7 girls.

Of the setback of switching the plays, Taylor says, “There have been struggles with getting the material under a firm grasp, there have been some dropouts, some replacements, but now that we’re two weeks away [from opening night] we are all in a good place.”

Opening night will be May 28 and will continue over the next week on the May 29 and also June 4 and June 5. All four performances will commence at 7:30p and tickets are $9 for general admission and $7 for students and seniors. Tickets and further information are available at 253 833 9111, ext. 2500 (or 206 464 6133, or 253 924 0180).
