The Unofficial SMT Fun and Frivolity Committee and friends met in the Glacier room for their second annual Ugly sweater party on the 21 on Janruary. Pizza and drinks welcomed the faculty members as they conversed together and commented on each other’s sweaters.
When asked about the inspiration that sparked the idea of Ugly sweater day, Janet Ash replied, “Khaki Thursdays and Rochelle Mitchell, she is always wearing stripes!” Janet and her peers are always trying to find cool ways to waste time and to have fun while working.
The ugly sweaters ranged from bright pink to brown and of course this being a Thursday, most attendees were wearing khakis with their sweaters. The origin of the ugly sweater party is skeptical but most believe it became popular in cold weather climate areas first then progressively grew popular around the globe.
Several websites specialize in selling the perfect ugly sweater for the special event. The Frivolity Committee has also had other events in which clothing was the object of play. Rochelle Mitchell, one of the main inspirations for this event, and the group itself, once went on a twenty-three day stripe strike wearing stripes every day and never wore the same stripes twice.
Math teacher Donnie Hallstone is known for wearing his nerdy math inspired t-shirts. Rochelle Mitchell convinced his wife to loan them some of his t-shirts and wore them to school the next day. The committee has also had brown bag lunch days and random funny e-mail forwards.
Barbara Brucker said, “The only bad thing about ugly sweater day is when someone mistakes you for wearing a sweater that day for being ugly when you didn’t know it was ugly sweater day!”
Will there be a third annual ugly sweater day next year for the committee? While no date has officially been set, members all agree that this should become a long-standing tradition after the roaring success of this celebration.
