Recycle mania hits Washington campuses

  Recycle Mania kicked off Jan. 17 for its 10th annual competition between colleges and university recycling programs. This friendly battle between any colleges who entered will be going until the March 27 for a total of ten weeks of cleaning up trash.

Port jobs program getting more funding

The Port Jobs program has been successful since 1993. The non-profit organization is intended to educate and train individuals into airport, building and construction careers.   Unfortunately, the support of the organization is diminishing as well as funding to continue.

Student loan policies changing, or are they?

Originally the Democrats in Congress made it seem like the government was going to be in charge of student loans and take that responsibility from the current private lenders. The search for a new GRCC president continues

  Feb. 4 – The Board of Trustees of Green River Community College met to discuss the preferred and most outstanding characteristics of which the college looks to find within candidates applying for the position of president. The college’s current president, Rich Rutkowski, will be retiring on July 30, 2010 after 26 years as a leader at the college.

People screw up. It’s a known fact that if you are human and you have a pulse you will screw up at some point. The only major difference is that if John Johnson, tax accountant screws up, not many people outside of the world of John Johnson notice or care.

Advance Warning for Class Options

Students are strongly encouraged by almost every level of Green River to map out their classes so they have a plan for their graduation. Counselors use the degree planning worksheets, students spend hours planning out their classes alone, and some teachers even give warning when a successive class will or won’t be offered.

Campus Corner Apartments: overpriced and not enough activities

  For $24.57 a day you can live at Campus Corner Apartments and be within walking distance of the college and live in a university like atmosphere, partying and all. Not only do you pay $2040 a quarter to live in a 9 x 9 bedroom, but you also get up to 3 roommates that you will either hate or become best friends with. 5 comments

Are budget cuts really the answer?

  Green River Community College (GRCC) has 7 percent more students this year than it did last year. This is more than likely due to the poor economy Washington state is going through right now. With employees getting laid off, they come to GRCC for enrollment with the training programs provided.

Pitchers seem to be key, as Green River Fastpitch prepares for a great season.

Fastpitch season is coming up at Green River Community College, with the first game being against the Central Washington Junior Varsity team on the 6th of March. Since the season is about to start, people have been talking. As a result of the discussions about the fastpitch team, it was reported that the team was actually short on players and would not be able to play if they were to not find any more players.

Lady Gators gave a good effort

Needing a win on Saturday in order to keep pace with the division leaders in the NWAACC west, the Lady Gators knew they had to take advantage of a scuffling South Puget Sound Lady Clippers squad. After taking a slim three point lead into halftime it looked as if the lady Gators were on the right track and headed towards a victory.

Men’s basketball takes a loss, but hopes for a quick turnaround

Heading into Saturday’s game on the road against South Puget Sound the Gator Men were looking to continue their recent hot streak and move into a tie atop the NWAACC west standings. Unfortunately, the Gators they got off to a slow start and were never able to recover as they lost to the Clippers 78-71.

GRCC men’s basketball starts off the New Year by beating the No. 4 team Tacoma CC.

After a disappointing 3-5 start to the Gator’s Men’s Basketball team, the New Year seems to have brought Green River new life.  Green River’s Men’s Basketball team began 2010 playing just a day after the start of the New Year against Grays Harbor.

Cafe Night‏ cooks up good tunes

Friends, family and coworkers all gathered last Thursday at the campus corner apartments for the laid-back Café Night event. Most of the event comprised of a small concert with touring singer/songwriters Andrew Belle and Allen Stone. Jamie Choe, the special events coordinator, and part of the Community Leadership Education and Outreach Program known as CLEO, organized Café Night.

Valentine’s dance a smash hit

Last Friday, the cafeteria in the Lindbloom was filled with music, dancing, decorations and seniors. It was the annual senior citizen’s Valentine’s Day dance, which meant good times for both students and senior alike. “This is our seventh year putting this on” says Jamie Choe (who organized the dance this year) “The people who come to the dance come back every year and wait all year for it.

Sea of red invades GRCC

Students, faculty support National Wear Red Day

National Wear Red Day is a day when Americans take women’s health care to heart and show their support by wearing red. According to a study done by the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute in 2006 heart disease is now the number 1 killer in women, regardless of race or ethnicity.

Holocaust Remembrance Day

On January 27, Green River’s Commencement Achievement Program (CAP) put together an event to raise awareness for Holocaust Remembrance Day. Before this year they had never done an event like this before, and it wasn’t until the last minute that the program decided to go along with it. 1 comment

Teacher Spotlight: Gary Oliviera

With his interest in photography and design, Gary Oliveira has enjoyed teaching at Green River Community College (GRCC) for 18 years. He is now teaching photography and art classes. Oliveira completed his bachelor of fine arts at the University of Dayton and received a master’s in Photography at Massachusetts College of Art and Design.

  Whether you’re an avid philosophy buff, or you think its all rubbish, the best way to state your opinion on the matter is to join Green River’s official philosophy club.   Veritas, the name of the club, is from Latin, which means "truth.

  Peer navigators in CAP (Commencement Achievement Program) are working hard to help students succeed in their educational goals on campus. CAP helps all Green River students, but they are specifically geared towards helping the under-represented groups such as international, minority and non-traditional students.

79-year-old student gets his diploma at GRCC

  With somewhat of a soft spot for the elderly, when the task of interviewing an army veteran who earned his high school diploma at the age of 79 was brought to the table, I immediately took it.  I love the stories of past generations and I must say that when I spoke to Master Sergeant Daryl Rothfus, he did not leave me disappointed at all. 1 comment

Rain scale inoperable at the moment

  The Rain Scale was constructed in September of 2008 and designed by artist Gary Bates. The sculpture stands a surprisingly 26 feet tall. Green River wanted a piece of art that was both representational and interactive for their students. The purpose of the Rain Scale is once the halo has collected over 2 cups of water, gravity causes a teeter-totter effect pouring that water out. 1 comment

  The video game takes place in the year 2025, three PMC (private military contractors) battle it out to see who gets the biggest paycheck. These “Big Three” companies are named Valor Company Inc., S.V.E.R (Seryi Volk Executive Response), and Raven Industries.

The Annual Grammy Awards are coming up this January 31st at 8pm on CBS and that can only mean one thing, endless speculation on who should win, who will win, and the outrage in the end when the one who you wanted to win doesn’t. This Songwriter’s Award is important to acknowledge because a song wouldn’t be a song without words.
